What I did: Ice ships is a passion project of mine which I hope to make a game based on some day. I decided use it to practice my 3D art. So far I have created 2 ships. I made schematics for them on graph paper, and then I modeled and textured them base on these schematics. I modeled in Maya and textured in Substance Painter. The final renders are shot in Unity HDRP.
Large Ship
About the Large Ship: The Large ship is designed to deal serious damage with head on collisions. I was inspired by things like Battle Bots and Pirates. Theoretically players could unlock more armor and upgrades for their ships, so I took a modular approach to each of the major parts. This ship showed me how vital Reference Material can be, because at times I did get lost in ambiguity and found that I needed more references.
Small Ship
About the Small Ship: The Small ship utilizes stealth and mid-ranged weapons. While making this ship I found it much easier to separate some of the mesh into individual objects. In substance painter I got a little carried away on the sails. I painted the spear and the skull with my mouse; this was before I got a drawing tablet so it took some time. I found how important it is to balance my time when texturing.
Rock Rampage
About the Game: Rock Rampage is game for PC, it is available on Itch.io for free download here https://cagd.itch.io/rock-rampage. I developed this game with a 4 person team while attending CSU Chico. I was the teams Producer and I managed the project using Jira. Additionally I created all the levels for the game, from annotated maps to fully tested and complete levels. I modeled and textured many of the objects in the game also, including some of the environment props and most of the vehicle parts. I also modeled/textured all of the terrain in the desert and snow worlds.
The Game Environment
About the Game Environment: Rock Rampage was in interesting game to develop. Our Designer chose to make the game 3D but side scrolling. Initially they wanted the terrain to be destructible, but that feature was out of scope. Ultimately after several changes I made the terrain out of a sweep tool in maya. Figuring out the terrain building process while juggling my other responsibilities was a challenge, but it turned out well enough and I learned a lot from the experience.
Game Objects
About the Objects: Vehicle Parts are modular in the game. This is because the player is able to build their own vehicle from parts by snapping them together on a grid. This means that each part had to be rotatable, and fit within a uniform box, while still being uniquely identifiable. The booster engine is one that I was particularly proud of and it was inspired by Donkey Kong.
Can ‘O Magic
About the Game: Can ‘O Magic is a mobile game that was made by 3 Developers. I was the teams Producer and I also made all of the art in the game. My team won an award at our university for this title which is 1st Place for Game (Small Team). Throughout the project my 2 team mates handled all the coding in the game, which allowed me to focus on modeling and texturing. I also made all of the particle effects and sound effects in the game as well. I am proud to say that it has received great feedback. Can ‘O Magic is available for free download on the Google Play Store at Download-Here
The Game Environment
About the Game Environment: According to the premise of the game. The player is a magical artificer, who toils away in their magical workshop making “Cans” of magic for the kingdom. The game design is a +1 design of Suika Game. Given the setting I designed this environment from a single perspective. The player can see in the background a desk with items cluttered about. They also see a kingdom out the window, with the sun setting on the horizon. My favorite prop was the magical textbook I made to give the scene some comical relief.
Game Objects
About the Objects: Orbs are what Can ‘O Magic is all about. There are 10 unique orbs in the game which the player drops into the can. When like orbs collide, they merge into the next larger orb. The design direction for these orbs was totally open to interpretation, so I made many of these ideas from scratch after collecting some reference material. There are also 3 special consumable items, as well as 6 rune (which unfortunately didn’t make it into the gold release)
Sand Kingdom Replica
About the Replica: Super Mario Odyssey is one of my favorite games for Nintendo Switch. For this replica project my team modelled and textured the entire scene of Tostarena Town, which is the first town that Mario encounters in the Sand Kingdom. This tiny village is colorful and attractive. It is similar in appearance to a Mexican villa, and it is populated by little skeleton people holding maracas. We split up the assets among the 5 of us and went to work.
Tostarena Town
About my contribution: The models that I was responsible for replicating during this project were a lot of fun, and you can see several of them in the pictures below. One of the things that helped me a lot in the process was that I have the game myself and I was able to run around the scene taking screen shots. That is how I got many of the profile angled reference images. The most intricate model that I made was the Snow Cone Cart and my favorite textures are the Cactus Pots. In Substance Painter I detailed the paint on the pots by hand.
Other Projects
About these projects: Below are a few projects that include some of my practice with 3D Art. Some of this practice is was pertaining emphasis on Texturing while others included Modeling and UVing. At this time I was learning to use Unity, Maya, Substance Painter, and Substance Designer.
Eddie the Robot Shop
About the Eddie project: Eddie the Robot is a model that I did not make myself, it was an educational tool that I downloaded from a community website called The Rookies in order to practice texturing techniques. I did model and texture everything else in this turn table scene however, including the Shrink Ray which is in the glass case in the middle of the shop. The concept art of that Shrink Ray came from a game called Outer Worlds developed by Obsidian Entertainment and that concept art is also not mine. This was only intended to develop my skills as a 3D artist and I will not redistribute these objects.
Additional Experience
About the my experience: While learning 3D Art I also practiced making my own game assets. I progressively advanced my skills and learned multiple techniques along the way. Below you can see a golden dragon statue that I 3D Scanned. I used software such as Metashape and zbrush to produce it. I also modelled some rock golem statues and a dungeon scene where an Iron Maiden is the centerpiece.
